Surgery

Soft tissue, orthopedic as well as neurosurgical interventions are all available for our cancer patients. Our surgery department is often the most important part of your pet's cancer treatment as it is often a requirement in all stages of oncology medicine (diagnosis, staging and therapy). Surgery most often allows confirmation of the diagnosis, it plays an important role in assessing lymph node involvement and involvement of other suspicious organs, and is usually the most vital step in the treatment of most cancers.

Currently, complete surgical resection is the most successful form of treatment for localized tumors. Unfortunately, in many cases, microscopic residual disease remains due to surgical limitations by the tumor's location. Adjuvant therapy (complimentary therapies that can further enhance the effectiveness of the cancer treatment) is often necessary to maintain better tumor control. Our surgical department works closely with our Oncology department (with both our medical and radiation oncologists) so that together we can determine the most optimal treatment plan.
